REFIRE / UNILIA talking transitioning fleets at the Canadian Hydrogen Convention

2024.04.24

(EDMONTON, 24 April 2024)

REFIRE and Unilia returned to the Canadian Hydrogen Convention in Edmonton in 2024, where our International Business Development Program Manager, Joy Roberts, participated in Edmonton Global's panel on Transitioning Fleets. Joy joined Alec Cervenka (Zero Emissions Sales Manager, Kenworth Truck Company) and Derek Hanson (Director, Transit Fleet Maintenance, City of Edmonton) to discuss global perspectives on the challenges and opportunities of transitioning fleets to hydrogen fuel cell mobility. This robust and engaging discussion highlighted the excitement surrounding hydrogen technology's potential to support a shift away from fossil fuels, particularly diesel, in heavy-duty and fleet applications.

However, this enthusiasm is slighly tempered by challenges such as infrastructure development and the lack of economies of scale typical of emerging technologies. Despite these hurdles, the total cost of ownership is expected to decrease as technology advances and more hydrogen supply becomes available. The panel reached a consensus that, with some support, the hydrogen economy could soon reach a tipping point where hydrogen fuel cell mobility makes sense not only ecologically but also economically.
