Rail operations demand high power, long range, and continuously availability. Hydrogen fuel cell locomotives meet these needs while eliminating diesel exhaust, soot, and noise along rail corridors and in railyards. From switchers to regional freight locomotives, hydrogen provides clean, efficient propulsion with the operational flexibility rail operators rely on.

Why Hydrogen for Rail & Locomotive?

Extended Range: Long haul capability without large battery banks or lengthy charging cycles.
High Power for Heavy Loads: Delivers the torque and durability needed for line-haul and yard operations.
Clean Corridors: Zero emissions reduce impacts on communities along rail lines.
Rapid Refueling: Hydrogen refueling aligns with existing operational schedules, minimizing downtime.

Rail Power Moving Global Goods

Model: 1000kW Hybrid Fuel Cell Locomotive

CRRC Qishuyan (one of China’s major locomotive manufacturers) introduced its first hydrogen-powered locomotive for international deployment. The locomotive uses Unilia fuel cell stacks integrated into multiple REFIRE PRISMA systems to deliver 400 kW of fuel cell power within a 1000 kW hybrid powertrain.

Designed for FCAB in Chile and its demanding mining and freight routes, the locomotive handles harsh desert conditions and steep gradients. Its lightweight structure reduces overall mass by 30 tonnes and its 35 MPa onboard storage holds 184 kg of hydrogen, supporting high-output, zero-emission operation across continuous duty cycles.

This project demonstrates how Unilia’s fuel cell technology is enabling hydrogen rail solutions globally and expanding the reach of our proven heavy-duty applications.
